Today I received an email from a friend I haven’t talked to in a couple years. Among other questions, she wanted to know if I was in a relationship.
I hate that question.
I don’t blame this person; how was she to know I hate that question? It’s the standard sort of question people ask. Once you start dating, the next question is “(When) Are you getting married?” And then “(When) Will you start having children?” And then what? I suppose they just start asking how the children are doing.
You are secondary to your relationship/parental status. By default. People don’t even think about it. When you don’t know what else to say, you ask about significant others or kids. Why is this?
Don’t answer that. I know why this is; as much as I would sometimes like to smack general U.S. society around, I live in it too. I know the rules.
I just… hate them. Hello world: this is me. I’m single. I enjoy it. Stop trying to shove a wedding ring on my finger, please, and ask me how I’m doing once in a while. Me, as a single, happy, well-adjusted individual.
Ok, you can argue the well-adjusted bit.
