Five Things You Don’t KNow About Me

Jan 9, 2007

Learning Horses has memed me. Wait… is “memed” a verb yet? If not, it should be. Incidentally, I’ve never been memed before–but I know how these things go: credit the person who tagged you (Learning Horses, check); do the meme (check); tag five more people (check).

So, you want to know five deep, dark secrets of my soul? Oh my. Well, here you go:

  1. The only subject I ever failed was spelling. In fact, I was once disqualified from a (fourth or fifth grade) spelling bee because I couldn’t spell “pirate.” I forgot the “i.” Ouch.
  2. For years I was so afraid of fire, I made my parents blow out any candles before I went to bed. When we lived in houses with any sort of fireplace or wood burning stove, they couldn’t light them until after I was asleep, or I’d come screaming (because I was terrified, not because I was being a willful princess brat) out of my room and make them put those out as well.
  3. Although I’ve lived in England three times (five years total), I can’t even fake a British accent. However, after one month in the mid-west, I picked up a midwestern accent that still comes out when I’m very tired or very stressed.
  4. I accidentally majored in Latin in college. The credit hours just sort of added up. So, senior year, I officially declared it as a second major. At the same time, I bought a fish and named him Catullus. I told my thesis advisor that if Catullus died, I was dropping the Latin major. She wasn’t as amused as I was. On a similar note, I once scored points on a math exam by proving I can divide by zero. And I aced a psych exam by answering the essay question “What’s your theory of personality?” with “Free will says I don’t have to answer this.”
  5. I own a camel saddle. That’s not horribly relevant to anything, but I like it and it makes a nice footstool.

Now, to nominate: Rider One, Keri, The Equestrian Vagabond, Madison, and Iron Bess Flint. Some of them, no doubt, are wondering why I’m tagging them, since I’ve never commented on their blogs. Sorry–I’ll try to comment more in the future. Consider this an indication of just how much I lurk on your blog–if you’re into the meme thing at all, I think it’d be very interesting to see your responses!

Camel saddle? Oooo! We had friends who had a cottage on Lake Michigan and my 2nd favorite piece of furniture in the place was a camel saddle! I was a kid at the time so I could sit on it and pretend comfortably. It was the sort of object that fueled imagination, you know?
