I am officially cursed

Houston, we have rain.

Lots of rain.

In fact, inches of rain.

We’ve received more rain today (per the most local county rainfall gauge) than we did for the entire month of September. Or August. Or July. Or any month out of the past twelve months, in fact, except January. And the rain is still coming down, so we may beat January yet.

Best of all, it’s the slow, soaking rain that we so desperately needed.

This won’t break the drought, but it’s a very welcome relief.

So why am I nattering on about being cursed?

Ro and I were supposed to go to a schooling show today.

In fact, we tried. I loaded her up in the rain, and she promptly started kicking and pawing at the trailer—something she used to do all the time but has virtually stopped for normal trailer rides. She Did. Not. like the sound of rain on the trailer.

We only made it about ten minutes down the road. Conditions were bad—I wasn’t comfortable pushing through, particularly given my relative lack of experience driving a trailer and Ro’s continued antics behind. I was also worried that she would injure herself if she kept it up, or, at best, would be stiff and sore and tired before we even started riding, making the entire experience miserable for both of us. What’s the point? There will be other schooling shows.

So, as far as Ro is concerned, today was a lesson in trailering in the rain. From her reaction, we obviously need to repeat this lesson (should the opportunity arise), but to her credit, she unloaded calmly and politely. She was just starting to get sweaty, but the trailer was also a little muggy since I’d had to shut the windows up. I think all the kicking and pawing was more impatience and protest than panic, which means we can work through this with time and repetition. She doesn’t have to like it, she just has to deal with it.

But I admit I’m disappointed. This is the third event this year I’ve tried to get her to and had to cancel.

I’m also amused. Because, seriously? Of all the things that could have gone wrong, it was rain? In this drought? Who would have guessed?!

OK devil’s advocate here…  you were officially blessed.  It was quite a storm with way too much water to be out driving around with a horse in a horse trailer.  Even experienced haulers bailed. Start counting those lucky stars…  one, two, three, ....

oh YEA…  and we got rain all over the city…  really…  silver lining…  one, two, three…

Actually, I kind of want to take credit for the rain.

I washed my truck AND gave Ro a bath on Saturday.

And I had a show on Sunday.

If that trifecta wasn’t guaranteed to bring Houston rain, I don’t know what would.

The rain was a good thing—of course it was. We needed that rain a heck of a lot more than I needed to take my horse to a show. No questions asked.

Still—Pity, Party of One would like some cheese with her whine. Reasonable seems to have gone on vacation, and Self Centered is taking over.

I think you could market that trifecta to the state of texas.

Why not come over and post this great blog at a new Equine Blogging Network at http://hay-net.co.uk/ for others to follow? It would be great to have you there!

My weather magic is unpredictable, but I think it’s safe to say it’s set back on “sunny” now.

I went to Portland (well, near Portland) for my brother’s wedding this weekend.

I made it sunny. I made coastal Oregon sunny.

Several of the wedding guests were commenting that they’d been to the area dozens of times visiting and never seen Mt. Hood, and it was out and wonderfully visible for the wedding.

So Texas will probably get another heat wave, now that I’m back.
