About

Despite owning a horse as a teenager, I’ve never grown out of the “I want a pony” stage.

The Super Saint was a once-in-a-lifetime horse and I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to own him. He gave me a great foundation and I went off to college feeling like a superstar. Unfortunately for me, college was a series of riding- and non-riding injuries, and afterward I took a couple years off riding to allow myself to fully heal. Although this worked in theory, by the time I got back on a horse, I discovered I’d developed a huge and not entirely rational fear of jumping.

Such is life. I always liked dressage better, anyway. As a friend pointed out, it allows me to indulge my inner perfectionist.

Now I’m working on relearning everything that seemed so effortless on the Super Saint. This blog is ostensibly a progress journal, but I ramble sometimes.

The text and gallery sections are part of a project I’ve been interested in working on for a long time. I’m interested in the way horses are depicted in art and literature, and by building these two databases I hope to start discovering some common (or exceptional) themes, tropes, metaphors, etc. I also hope the collections will serve as an educational reference for others who are trying to find horse-related works.

The liege lord of Castile himself should Bavieca ride:

“For neither Spain nor Araby could another charger bring
So good as he, and certes, the best befits my king.
But that you may behold him, and know him to the core,
I’ll make him go as he was wont when his nostrils smelt the Moor.

With that, the Cid, clad as he was in mantle furred
